Type of Bee

Apis sp. is a group of bees that collect pollen and nectar and brew them into honey. In the bee's group, there will be three types of bees; one queen bee, 1-15 million worker bees and 500-1500 male bees/drone. Bees will keep working to collect nectar/food, during the day they will collect nectar while in the night they will brew the nectar into honey. They also play an important role in plant pollination.

Queen bee

* Appearance: slender and steady.

* Life: 3-4 years.

* Work: spawning, the only female eggs which can undergo spawning process. The sperm of the drone can be kept alive for several years in the body of the queen bee and has the ability to inseminate.

* When the queen bees death, the colony will nurture the new queen.

Worker bee

* Appearance: the body is small, but skill is vigorous.

* Work: looking for nectar, collecting honey, pollen, built honeycomb, protecting the hive.

* Life: 50-60 days.

Drone:

* Appearance: larger than the workers and round, the body was black.

* Work: no other task,  responsible for mating with the queen only, immediately death after the mating.

* Life: 50-60 days.

* There is no sting, so do not have the ability to attack.

Structure of the Bee

The body surface of bee is made of hundreds of pieces of chitin, and there are many thick hairs on the hard film. These hard pieces are called exoskeleton, this exoskeleton are able to protect the internal structure of the bee, prevent moisture loss; and the internal protrusions provide muscle attachment to the bee. The body of bee is divided into three parts, that is, the head, chest and abdomen.

The head of the bee has mouth, compound eyes, monocular/ simple eye, tentacles and sensory hair; the chest consists of three knots, each section has a pair of feet, respectively, forefoot, midfoot, hind foot. The latter two sections each have a pair of wings; the abdomen consists of several sections, with wax gland opening, sting needle and so on.

The size of queen bee and worker bee are small, with a small and dumbell-shaped of compound eyes on both sides of the head. There is a sting needle at the end of queen bee and worker bees' abdomen. The abdomen's length of queen bee is about twice as long as the worker bee, so it is easy to identify. The body surface of the worker's bee has a very fine special structure, which allows the bees to collect nectar, pollen, propolis and so on. The shape of the male bee/ drone is round fat, with a large hemisphere compound eyes, abdomen end round with a lot of hair, no sting needle.

Stingless Bee (Trigona sp.) is living in the tropics area. It is active in tropical and sub-tropical country such as South-East Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines), Australia, Tropical America (Mexico, Argentina), India and Sri Lanka. Stingless bee do not have sting, so they will not sting people; but if their hives are disturbed, they will bite to defense their hive. Stingless bee hive is built in a protected tree trunk with a small entrance and guarding bees were stationed at the entrance.

Stingless bee hive are separate into two portions/nests which are larvae nest and storage nest. Normally, stingless bee used the sticky resin - propolis to built their hives and nests.

.

When the stingless bees are young, they will stay at their hives; when growing up, they are responsible to collect nectar and protect their hive against enemy. Normally one hive of stingless bee can accommodate 1000-3000 worker bees.

The hind legs of Stingless bee have enlarged parts which can let the bees to bring the pollen and propolis back to their hive. This enlarged part is called the pollen basket. After the stingless bee collected nectar or pollen and back to their hive, you may see the pollen basket is filled with yellow or orange colour of pollen or propolis.

 Stingless bees like to collect resin, these resins are used to make propolis. Besides, stingless bee also collect nectar and then bring back to their hive, the concentration of stingless bee honey is dilute if compared with pure honey.

There is an easier way for bee keepers to collect the stingless bee honey by using stingless bee cup. The used of stingless bee cup can reduce the time of stingless bee to make their own hive/comb.

Importance of Honey

Bee products are nature from the bees, and then bees contribute to human. Honey is a natural food, it provides variety of nutrients and benefits that human body needed. Honey has about 60% of natural sugars, and most of the sugars come from fructose and glucose. The moisture content of honey is about 18-20%. In addition, honey also contains vitamins (vitamin B6, vitamin B1), minerals (iron, copper, calcium, sodium), protein, vitamins, micro-elements, amino acids and else.

Nectar contained about 60-80% of moisture content, bees need to undergo processing such as evaporation about 5 to 7 days to reduce the water content of  honey to 18-20% and then cover the honey by using bee wax. When the bee hive/honey comb is fully-filled with honey, beekeepers will collect the honey, filter and then pack the filtered honey into bottle.

Bees are very hardworking, normally a bee can only carry 20 mg of nectar. If collecting 1 kg of nectar, worker bee need to fly about 50 to 60 million times. Besides, to produce of 1 gram of honey, worker bees need to collect about 1500-1600 flowers of the nectar.

With the development of science and technology, people have more understanding with honey. Honey is goods to human health as mentioned below:-

1. Provide 'natural' energy

Honey can produce a lot of carbohydrates which then provide energy for our body. Honey contains natural sugars - glucose which can be quickly absorbed by the body's blood circulation and then quickly provide energy to the body. Fructose found in the honey is slowly absorbed by the human body, but it can provide lasting energy for the body. These energies can help to enhance physical strength, reduce fatigue, and effectively relieve muscle pain caused by excessive exercise, lasting energy for the muscles.

2. Improve the body's immune system

Honey have bactericidal function that can help to prevent the propagation of certain bacteria, thus keep the external wound clean, free from infection and promote wound healing. Honey can also be used to treat small acne, it can inhibit the onset of acne caused by bacteria, promote skin rehabilitation. For thousands of years, honey is considered to be one of the "natural health care products", it can be used to relieve sore throat, nourishing throat, expectorant, lungs, cough effect.

3. Natural moisture absorption effect

Honey's hygroscopic effects make honey widely used in cosmetics, mainly used to keep the skin delicate and prevent the skin dry. Therefore, some people call honey as a natural "moisturizing cream", which can keep the skin moist for a long time. When honey is used in skin and hair care, it makes the skin lasting elasticity, and the hair becomes soft and healthy.

4. Honey contains a lot of antioxidants

Honey contains antioxidant function, it can effectively improve the digestive system, and help the body to maintain health. These antioxidants can help to remove free radicals in the body, promote metabolism and also for the growth of new tissues of the human body.
